Syn slavného otce Ed Dunlop je typickou ukázkou jablka, které se nezakutálelo daleko od stromu. Jeho otec John Dunlop patřil k nejslavnějším dostihovým trenérům své doby a v roce 1995 se stal dokonce britským šampiónem ve svém oboru. V té době ovšem už Etonem vzdělaný Ed prošel tříletou stáží v australském Sydney a v hřebčínech v Kentucky a Irsku, aby se do Británie vrátil jako asistent trenéra Nicky Hendersona. V Newmarketu nastoupil v devadesátých letech k Alexu Scottovi a několikrát se důrazně nechal slyšet, že si od otce nehodlá nechat prošlapávat cestičky, ale jinak si v rodině našel řadu poučení – například to, že s dobrými koňmi je záhodno za dostihovými starty často cestovat.
Vlastní tréninkové středisko založil jako trenér Maktouma al Maktouma v roce 1994 a v roce 1996 trénoval první klasickou vítězku, Ta Rib, která uspěla ve francouzské „jarní ceně klise“. Další klasiky však na jeho konto přibývaly pomalu až v roce 2001 vyhrál s Lailani irské Oaks a také Flower Bowl Invitational v americkém Belmont Parku. Pak už však pro Dunlopa přišla slavná éra Ouijy Board a její Oaks (2004), BC Filly and Mare turf (2004 a 2006) a Hong Kong Vase (2005). „Na takového koně čekáte celý život a mnoho trenérů se ho ani nedočká,“ konstatoval trenér na konto své slané svěřenkyně poté, co mu podruhé vyhrála vytoužený Breeders´ Cup. „Cestujete s ním po celém světě, a kam přijde, tam vám dělá radost. No řekněte: lze si vůbec přát něco lepšího?“
Dunlop měl sice loni v tréninku i vítěze Sussex Stakes Court Masterpice, ale v mezinárodním kontextu se mezi jeho jméno a jméno fenomenální klisny prakticky dává rovnítko: Ed Dunlop je mužem, který „udělal“ Ouiju Board, a ta zase na oplátku „udělala“ jeho. „Nyní mě čeká velmi nesnadný úkol. Najít a natrénovat koně, který se jí pokusí vyrovnat. Sám nevím, jestli je to možné,“ soudí trenér, který rád zaměstnává české pracovní jezdce a je znám jako nevyzpytatelný muž znalý svého řemesla.
